Auditioning against more than 600 people, juniors Paris Naster and Austin Klein and senior Morgan Sterrett were selected as part of the Storyteller ensemble in the Theatre in the Park production Children of Eden this summer.

Sterrett said the role involves narrating the gaps between characters’ dialogue with singing and dancing. For her, she said it has been nothing but a positive experience, especially with the cast, as everyone works together extremely well.

“When everyone’s on the same page, it just meshes and clicks,” Sterrett said. “It’s amazing that we can all work together to make such a beautiful show.”

The cast has been rehearsing Sunday nights through Thursday nights for around six weeks. But all this time together isn’t unfamiliar to Sterrett, Naster and Klein, since they have been performing together in countless productions since middle school. Sterrett said having familiar faces with her each step of the way is extremely supportive.

“It’s kind of a comfort blanket to have Paris and Austin there with me for every rehearsal,” Sterrett said. “The first week was intimidating since I had never been in a park show before, but to know two people going into it, and knowing they have my back and I have theirs, was really comforting.”

The production kicks off the 2013 Theatre in the Park season with opening night tonight at 8:30. Performances run June 7-9 and June 13-15.

“I’m both nervous and excited,” Sterrett said. “But I have such confidence in the cast, we know the stuff like the back of our hand. All of us truly love the show, and I’m more excited than anything to share what we’ve been working on with such a large audience.”

Junior Sam Guinn became the 6A state champion in the 1600 meter race this afternoon, and took second place in the 3200 meter race with times of 4:19 min and 9:17 min.

Although the team did not place all together in the meet, Guinn said there were many individuals who did well and had strong showings. Senior Alyson Youngdoff took second place in the 300 meter hurdles, the girls 4X4 team consisting of freshmen Hannah VanBuskirk and Isabelle Aube, junior Carolina VanBuskirk, and Youngdoff took fifth place, and sophomore Miles Alexander took sixth place in long jump.

According to Guinn, one reason for his success was how he planned for the effects of the wind on his race. The wind has been a factor all weekend and was blowing hard this afternoon, Guinn said, so he made sure he was not leading the majority of the race and drafted off some other runners to pull into the lead.

“I was thrilled [once I won the 1600],” Guinn said. “It’s something that’s been the goal since the beginning. It’s cool to do well in other good meets, but in the state meet, that’s something really special that can’t be matched with any other performance out there.”

Guinn said some major contributing factors to winning was consistency and believing in himself. Although he would have a bad race every now and then, Guinn said he would not let that get him down or discourage him. He would remain focused because the state meet was always in the back of his mind, Guinn said.

“I was very confident about doing well,” Guinn said. “But saying it and doing it are two completely different things. Next year I would like to return and defend my title in the 1600 meter and win the 3200 meter. I would also like to go for a record.”

The girl’s soccer team defeated BVN in the 6A state championship game this afternoon, 2-1. Senior Emily Herndon scored both of BVNW’s goals: the first was a direct kick with 14:49 left in the first half, and the second was assisted by junior Kara Priest with 27 min left in the game. The team’s defense only allowed BVN one goal in the second half by Macy Dodd. The Huskies cap off the season with a record of 16-5-1.

According to senior Sam Nicolay, the team played best when they played with the ball on the ground and not in the air. For awhile, Nicolay said the team played the game with the ball in the air and since the other team was taller they would intercept it a lot. Once the Huskies started playing with the ball on the ground and played how they usually play, Nicolay said the team took control of the game.

“I was filled with excitement [when we won],” Nicolay said. “I was so happy for the team that we were able to finish the season with a state championship. It was so fun because everyone on the team was so excited… [my favorite moment] was definitely seeing everyone’s reactions. It was so stressful toward the end of the game because we were only up one and they could have tied it. So when the final whistle blew it was so much fun and so exciting that we won it all.”

Nicolay attributes the team’s success to their chemistry. According to Nicolay, everyone on the team was close, and she believes teams play better together when everyone likes each other. This was the Huskies strongest asset, Nicolay said.

“[My advice to next year's team] is to play every game like it could be your last game, especially once it gets into the post game because it’s single elimination and no one wants that feeling of ’Oh, we’re done. This sucks we ended on a loss.’,” Nicolay said. “I would say leave everything on the field and give it your all. Play like it’s your last game because you never know when it could be.”

The girl’s soccer team faced Maize HS in the 6A state semi-finals this evening and won, 5-0. The team will advance to the championship game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. and face BVN.

The Huskies started out the game with a bang as sophomore CeCe Kizer scored an unassisted goal within the first 30 seconds of the game. Kizer went on to add two goals and one assist to her stats for the night. Junior Kara Priest also tacked on two goals for BVNW, one of which was assisted by Sierra Bryant.

Defensively, the Huskies shut down the Eagles allowing no goals. Senior Sam Nicolay was able to record a shut out from the goalie’s box.

“The defense is a huge help and the midfield getting back helps too,” Nicolay said. “It’s really a whole team effort, but it’s a lot easier to get a shut out when you know you have a good defense working with you.”

According to senior Emily Herndon, the game went well because the girls worked together as a team and played together as one unit. The Huskies will need to communicate and mark up the midfield in order to win tomorrow, Herndon said.

“I’m super excited to win and super happy because it’s my senior year so it’s really awesome to go out like this,” Herndon said. “I know tomorrow will be emotional and I know it will depend on how we handle the pressure, but I also know we can do it. As long as we play like we’ve been playing, we’ll win.”

Nicolay said the team must go in to tomorrow’s game with the mindset of confidence, not cockiness. The team has already beaten BVN, Nicolay said, but that win does not mean anything now.

“Obviously I’m expecting to win, but we can’t go in with the mindset of thinking we for sure will,” Nicolay said. “We have to go in confident but not cocky. Just play like we normally do and not freak out just because it’s the championship game. I just want us to play like it’s any other game. Leave everything on the field and do our thing.”

The girls softball team took the field at the state tournament for the first time in ten years this afternoon. The team took on the defending state champions, Olathe East for the first round of the tournament, and lost 5-0.

The Huskies started out slow, only achieving one hit in the first half inning and allowing two runs by OE to cap it off. The team struggled with finding gaps on the offensive side the entire game, only three or four hits in seven innings. Head coach Kim White said the team has been hitting the ball all season, and though they hit hard today, they hit the ball directly toward opponents.

“We had two balls that we got doubled up on,” White said. “We’ve got a steal going and the batter pops the ball up so we get doubled out of an inning there. It really kills momentum. We didn’t have a lot of luck there.”

Senior Mackenzie Walker said the team played well together, although they were all nervous to play. However, Walker said the team came out with admirable intensity that they were unable to keep up.

“I’m just sad [the season’s] over,” Walker said. “I wish it would have lasted longer, but I’m glad we made it this far. This season as a whole has been amazing… we didn’t expect to get this far. In the last ten years we’ve been the best BVNW has had, so I’m really proud of this team.”

According to White, the senior leadership on the team has been phenomenal this past season. The team played for each other, and White said in her six years of head coaching at BVNW she has never seen a group of girls play more for the team instead of themselves individually. Every girl on the team sacrificed so much, White said, which is why it is hard for White to believe it is over.

“It’s really hard for me to put my emotions into words because these girls have just worked so hard all season,” White said. “We were one of the top eight teams in the state. It was a hell of a season. Without a doubt the best season I’ve had at BVNW. They wanted it, and they wanted it bad. They worked every single day to get better, they worked every single day for each other. High school kids just don’t do that anymore, and I think it’s important that they realize that the coaching staff appreciates their hard work and their effort. I just want the girls to know how proud I am of their attitudes, their efforts, and their selflessness all season. It’s been an awesome ride.”
