Senior Tatum Specht poses in front of the main entry at BVNW, wearing a tank top that meets the new guidelines.

Principal Amy Murphy sent an email to the BVNW community this morning concerning dress code for the coming year. The dress code now allows tank tops that meet certain guidelines. The email said this is due to students’ concerns relating to tank tops last year. The email is included below:

Dear BVNW Community,
As you begin to purchase school clothes for this year, I wanted to remind you of the dress code here at BVNW. Please read it carefully. The administration has listen to your concerns and has made some changes to the “shoulder rule.”  We will now allow tank tops that meet specific guidelines. Student clothing shall be appropriate for students in the business of learning.  Clothing or appearance that distracts from the purposes of school shall not be permitted.
The following are not allowed:
  • Apparel that allows a bare midriff – including sheer tops without proper coverage underneath them
  • Apparel that allows underwear to show ( i.e. boxers under low slung pants, bra straps, sheer tops)
  • No spaghetti strap tops without a shirt underneath or over. Tank tops must have straps that are 2” or wider.  Tops with straps less than 2” will not be allowed.
  • Clothing that is too tight on the body (i.e. tube tops and leggings without something over them)
  • Extremely short shorts or short skirts – shorts and skirts will be considered an appropriate length if a student’s thumb reaches material with arms at his/her side.
  • Necklines that are provocative
  • Clothing that advertises illegal activities or items students cannot legally buy
  • Hats/caps/bandannas/hoods will not be worn during the school day
  • Trench coats may be worn to and from school but not during the day
  • Sheer or see-through tops must have a camisole under them that fully covers the student’s torso.
Students who violate the dress code will be required to change into something that meets the dress code requirements.  If a student does not have something else at school to change into, a parent/guardian will be contacted to bring something appropriate to the student.  If clothing cannot be provided, the student will receive a disciplinary consequence.  We encourage parents/guardians to monitor your student’s dress to support a learning environment.
Thanks for your continued support!

Proud Principal
We will be posting a story with more details and reactions to the changes soon.
