Throughout the majority of the first set, the Huskies maintained a steady lead over Shawnee Mission West on Oct. 16. However, the game took a turn after a 7-1 point run was pieced together by the Vikings.

BVNW was forced to call a timeout with a mere 18-17 lead over Shawnee Mission West. Up until this point, senior Anna Chalupa said the Huskies were playing motivated against the Vikings.

“I thought we showed up really, really well in the first set,” Chalupa said. “I thought we came out really strong with a lot of energy and intensity, but I think we got comfortable at the end of that first set.”

This run by Shawnee Mission West would prove to even the match and make for a thrilling finish.

Towards the end of the first set, BVNW trailed for the first time of the night at 20-21 in favor of the Shawnee Mission West. After that, the Huskies and Vikings continually traded points, both unable to pull away. In set points for Shawnee Mission West, the BVNW volleyball team came up big by scrambling their way to winning those point. However, the Vikings proved to be too much for the Huskies to handle as they were able to mount a late surge which led to them defeating BVNW in the first set, 28-30.

Head coach Molly Haggerty said the Huskies had control for part of the match, but self inflicted mistakes was the downfall of the team in the first set.

“I felt we were in control and had some good things going on,” Haggerty said, “and then we started making some unforced errors which made it difficult for our girls to get momentum back on our side, and that’s kind of what the sport is all about.”

A deflating first set for the Huskies gave all the momentum to the Vikings. In the second set, BVNW struggled which ultimately led to a victory in the second set, 20-25. After losing both sets, the Huskies were defeated by the Vikings in the match, 0-2 (28-30, 20-25).

Prior to the game, the five seniors for BVNW – Laura Bredemeier, Anna Chalupa, Cassie Pascarella, Stacie Williams and Allie Honn – were recognized on their Senior Night. The Huskies will play their final home game on Oct.17 against Olathe North at 5 p.m.
