Coming back from a tough loss against Washburn Rural in the state semifinal game, the BVNW boys varsity soccer team defeated Wichita East 7-0 today.

It didn’t take long for the Huskies to start racking up points; just five minutes into the game senior Trevor Kerns scored the first goal. With 29 minutes left in the first half, Kerns scored again, followed by a goal by junior Brian Kim just four minutes later. At the end of the first half, BVNW led Wichita East 3-0.

With 34 minutes remaining in the second half, junior Andrew Binder scored as well. Junior Blake Shadwick scored with 23 minutes left, increasing the lead to 5-0. With 12 minutes remaining in the game, Kerns scored his third and final goal, resulting in beating the current BVNW record for most goals scored in one season. The previous record was 20 goals, which Kerns topped by two. Securing one final goal, senior Jake DeJulio scored with four minutes remaining, defeating Wichita East 7-0.

Head coach Rick Pribyl said how proud he was of the team for coming out after a tough loss and keeping their heads up in a time of defeat.

“The guys played their hearts out today,” Pribyl said. “It has been a joy watching this team battle for every point. The game is always changing and although we didn’t get the outcome we wanted yesterday, today was a great win.”

Kerns agreed with Pribyl that the outcome was not the most desirable, he was still happy with how the team finished.

“The third place game wasn’t as high of a level as last year, but it was really nice to be able to end my high school career with a big win,” Senior Trevor Kerns said. “I wish we could have made it to the final of course, but I am happy with today’s outcome.”

According to Kerns, the end of the season was bittersweet because they fell short of their expectations.

“It was really hard because we felt like we deserved to win that semifinal game, but we just couldn’t finish,” Kerns said. “We had a very successful season but we didn’t finish it off how we would have liked. It’s tough to know that I will never put on a Northwest uniform again.”
